Update... (2-16)

The research proposal and source analysis seemed to be well liked by both my colleagues and teachers. I am looking forward to bringing this subject together and tell the global society about a topic that is routinely a part of lives forever and today.

Best to all, -John Ott

P.S. Jim, thank you for the articles. I have already been able to use these to add some more substance to the argumentative issue.

Here Is Another Prospect Of The Paper (2-9)

2-9-06 Strong Argument

I think that the strong argument would be that people reading will go away feeling that even though “All Bad Things Are Good For You” by Stephen Johnson that in the sense video games shouldn’t be feared, they can be an excellent break in moderation. The whole idea of a video game is to get the person feeling as though they are actually there without out allowing the mind to develop irrational thought and sense of misunderstanding. The point is to have a “break” or maybe spend time with friends as a way to socially interact. The misguided youth perceives the activity as real life and may venture to make video games the only activity throughout the day. In that case, this person may want to seek professional help.

I will also point out the key activities that go on throughout the brain while playing the video game. I will be showing why behavior modification goes from the way of the game. I will also have undeniable evidence because I will most likely be taking the test results myself. I will allow for no inaccuracies through this method. Most likely I will also be able to answer why video games are so popular, and how they have influenced IQ levels on the generation.

John:

Your posits set-up some great "creative tension." And address the cause and effect scenario. I will be looking foward to your continued reseach and ultimate evaluations. Keep up the Great Work! Here are some additional sources for your body of work:

Source Analysis (2-8)

Source Analysis

Primary Source: The Effect of Video Games on the Brain, Eleni Kardaras, Observation, February 2, 2006

Secondary Source: Scientific Article: “Dome Improvement”
May 2005 Issue 13.05
Wired Magazine

Video games have often been given a bad reputation of being mind-numbing, and dull. However I am still astonished as to why these games are still being sold on the market! If video games are so “bad” then why are they still being sold to children and adults alike? I’m going to answer these questions as well as provide some information that might explain the real impact of video games on the minds of today.

To dissect these thoughts primary and secondary resources have been given. (I will incorporate more to the study as it becomes available.) A primary source I have used to give direction is an observation entitled The Effect of Video Games on the Brain. In this observation, brothers are documented as they play the video games in real time. This allows for accurate interpretation of the cerebral cortex at work. These children were hands- on, playing the game “Mario Kart” for the Nintendo Gamecube. In the observation these two didn’t function as emotionally connected individuals, one brother was documented hitting, screaming, and swearing, at the other as he had beat him in a race.

Later that day, one of the brothers was playing the game on the exact stage he had previously beaten his brother on. As he had become unsuccessful beating the computer the boy was documented throwing down the controller and crying, “Why are you doing this to me.” at the T.V. screen (Kardaras 1). Some disadvantages of using this study come from the fact that two brothers are only playing this one game. Even though further research is given to supplement the data of brain and beta wave activity, Kandaras has only observed the two brothers playing that game only. Also clear is the point that emotion has played a big part of video gaming, but the question is; is there a long term damaging effect? Though the information given has been deemed accurate, future explanation that will arise from the data I will bring in could put this source down to a few key points.

A secondary resource that is implemented today is the “Dome Improvement”, a scientific article done by Wired Magazine. In this resource IQ is has increased despite mindlessness on programmed on the television. Scientific intellectual breakthroughs are being made even though there doesn’t seem to be a deemed reason as to how this can be so. Scientists such as Flynn have discovered that the general IQ has risen 17 IQ points from 1947 to 2001, and “blacks are sufficiently gaining more knowledge faster then whites when given the opportunities which should be out rightly given to them.” (Wired 2).

In this scientific study it is also explained that environment interaction plays a significant involvement in adaptation of broadening old skills and developing new ones. Needless to say, “the information regarding heredity is not wrong, we just misinterpreted them.” (Wired 2). Now there is no sense of getting bent out of shape because the collective thinks that heredity is the only way to receive a high IQ point. The environment has taught and shown the world that we are in fact as a whole are getting smarter with each passing day, particularly as a generation of kids have grown up learning to solve their way out of dungeons before they learned to read or write. With enough practice, it is possible to figure out how to become masters of the domain and path we choose.

Some disadvantages that come from this scientific study are points that aren’t well interpreted and leveled out yet. Maybe it can be deemed that the level of understanding and self-awareness from learning is still in question.

Some updates... (2-8)

Today has been a long day... I have been going through documenting and finishing all I needed to do for class so that all that will be left is some work for Friday. I will hopefully have a chance to have a free weekend and allow for other things I want to do and not have to do!

Either way I am going to be sending an update to the Research Proposal (so check that post again, the date is 2-2) and preview the Source Analysis for the video game argumentative.

Documenting Stress (2-6)

In a couple of days or maybe even weeks I will be documenting a stress journal on this blog. I will be open to revisions that the audience will undoubtedly give that will allow me to become a more efficient individual. This three week commitment (which means twenty-one posts) will allow the collective who view this blog to get to know me a little bit better. Needless to say, I hope all of you enjoy this experience! I will provide information as it becomes available.

Brainiacs Wanted... (2-6)

Brought to you by G4TV, comes a show that is similar to "The Eyes of Nye." This means that science is put on a pedestal which makes for informative and downright entertaining viewing all at once. While some of the subjects are accredited to being "crude," you can't deny it is fun to learn and experiment for yourself. (With proper precautions of course...)

The News For Michigan Is In! (2-6)

Michigan has failed once again! Forget the Super Bowl and forget the education plan! Just because change has came about in the past few weeks doesn't mean that the image of the state, and the city of Detroit, have been revitalized in any way shape or form.

HEATHER L. CHIARELLO and THOMAS J. SUGRUE refute the statements of positive interaction with some significant points of relevancy. In both of their editorials they claim Detroit and the state of Michigan is taking a step forward, but taking two steps back in the process.

Both of their claims will be located at the end of the post.

One Reason That Could Be A Deciding Factor To Pursue Journalism! (Greed Or Need? You Decide!) (2-6)

I should become a journalist because I like to write and expose the truth whenever possible. However, I found that even though my previous statement is true, another factor has come up lately in the past couple of weeks. I would love to interview or be interviewed by Morgan Webb! Have any of you seen her? She has a vast knowledge of video games and design, co-hosts the show X-Play, and she is a bombshell.

The above statement does seem silly, but it would be relevant to gain some knowledge about video game design, and visit the Tokyo Game Show!

In my free time, I will be adjudicating the information and skills that could very well make this possible as well as make the collective successful along the way. (Having a dream is good, but acting on it in a positive way is utter bliss!)

More Work!? Thank You... (2-6)

First off, I'd like to send my thanks to Jim for giving me some information that will no doubt spark my interests and aspirations. Second, I have to take this chance to inform all of you of an update I have received regarding the OCC transportation problem. This situation hasn't been resolved! (Try walking through six inches of pure icy snow on a unleveled sidewalk in crutches!)
A few members of friends and OCC staff have informed me that I will be talking higher measures regarding this problem. From my understanding, these measures will consist of a roundtable discussion similar to the Agriscience Agrivisory board.

As I have mentioned in a previous post, The reason the pathways need to be shoveled and managed is because it is practical, and it is FEDERAL LAW!

More will be coming your way soon... I will let you in on the information when it becomes available.

Best to all, -John Ott

P.S. I heard from the "Grape Vine" that we have a new chairman / president of the Agriscience committee. Who is it? (: When did this happen? (: Will he be doing any real work? (:

Good News, I'm Not The Only One! (2-5)

Gives credit to poster "Victor von Doom" on the GameFAQS message board!

George W. Bush, Accomplishments as President (1st term):

-Attacked and took over 2 countries

-Spent the U.S. surplus and bankrupt the U.S. Treasury

-Shattered the record for the biggest annual deficit in history

-Set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the stock market

-First president in decades to execute a federal prisoner

-First president in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record

-In first 2 years in office over 2 million Americans lost their jobs

-Dissolved more international treaties than any president in U.S. history

-First president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission

-First President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Elections Monitoring Board

-Members of cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history

-Signed more laws and executive orders amending the constitution than any other president in U.S. history

-Cut health care benefits for war veterans

-Presided over worst security failure in U.S. history

-Set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously take to the streets to protest him (15 million people), shattering the record for protest against any person in the history of mankind

Adding to these his failure to do much of anything to prevent Hurricane Katrina victims and his illegal wiretapping, infringing on the civil liberties of U.S. citizens, I find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe that anyone could do a worse job as president of the United States.

I would also like to say that anyone who believes all that Bush has done as president is right, yet it is "horrible" for someone to poke a little fun at his level of intelligence, has a very twisted sense of morals.

Best to all, -John Ott

P.S. It is nice to see well educated and well spoken people in the world!

RE: Are video games “bad?”

Exploratory Research

Video games can be boring and uneventful to others because they don’t know much about it or because they simply dislike them. I have found that generalities have plagued this issue because others that see those involved with this hobby tend to find the negatives in the outlook that is viewed on the screen. I will establish a legitimate answer to the pros and cons on video games to the brain and also provide a stance on how I feel about video games and video game playing. I’m confused as to why video games are given such a bad reputation! If they are so bad and corrupt to children and adults alike, then why are they still on the market!? The fact of real impact to effect on the brain will be know at least more then it is know before the study.

Focused Research

In order to get a more in depth analysis of this issue I will be taking the time to interview those who actually deem themselves an expert on the visual level from me. I will be taking a self-inflected P.E.T. Scan or (fMRI) to document the actual brain scan activity to determine if the affects of playing can actually be harmful to the brain. In this case it is important to identify a “use it to lose it” basis. I will also be using several articles such as
The Effect of Video Games on the Brain, Eleni Kardaras, Observation, February 2, 2006,
Scientific Article: “Dome Improvement” May 2005 Issue 13.05 Wired Magazine.
(More research will be documented as it becomes available.)

Resources

I have found out about and I’m looking forward to the Communication Arts Program during sometime in February. This program will allow me to speak with the Dean at Michigan State University who is running a workshop in 3-D Gaming. I will also be using the above sources as well as anything else pertinent that becomes available throughout the timeframe allotted.

April 20-25 Research Paper Due, and Self-Assessment Preparation.

April 27 Final on Self Assessment, and General Education Attributes Assessment.

Personal Gain and Discovery

From the research I will be able to accurately determine for myself and the collective the real effects of video games on the brain beyond the broad prospective. This topic is new and fresh and video games will only become more popular as the years go by. Wouldn’t it be nice to finally understand what the fuss is all about? It has been documented that emotional development and cognitive development are “documented”, but the effects of the research has been brought about in order to slam video games for being unproductive and a waste of time. I have grown from a new generation that has learned to find my way out of a dungeon before I learned how to read or write. There is also no reason to deny that general IQ has gone up unbenounced to teachers and professors everywhere from the low test scores students’ predominately receive. Video games have been classified as effective as a daydream and twice as exciting. These two subjects provide the only scenarios that an individual can have momentary escape that can pit themselves against insurmountable odds and come out on top through problem solving and fun. That I believe is the purpose of a video game.

Possible Meeting Date For The Communication Arts Program? (2-2)

I will provide several links throughout the post!

Hey Jim, I was just wondering if you had an update on the planned date for this meeting. I have been asked by my teacher in Composition class to come up with a research topic to write an argumentative paper on. The teacher had noted to all of the students that they should pick something that is interesting and pertinent to them. I have decided it would be interesting to write about the "Effects Of Video Games On The Brain." This is a topic that hasn't been beaten to death, and since I have a deep interest along those lines I could figure out what can be represented to the topic and develop my understanding.

My final draft for the Interview/Observation is due on 3-9-06. If it is possible to interview the Dean or to go through an exploratory of his line of work... I am sure I could get some valuable information for the paper and future decisions.

I would also like to know if it would be possible if I could bring a tape recorder to help keep my analysis accurate.

The following is some questions I pondered on through class...
****************************************************************************
1-19-06

I absolutely enjoy video games so I am sure I’m going to pick a topic along these lines. I have been thinking about picking something along the lines of, “video games and the effects on the collective.” Parents seem to think that video games are way to harmful and that this selection of fun isn’t good for the brain. However, I am going to throw the points out there and say, “Well this activity is better then doing drugs, or giving up on yourself for the choices that you have made.

As parents or those in opposing viewpoints reflect over those issues… I could also argue the point of ESRB rating systems. Why does there have to be a board of members keeping the job of parenting in the back pocket. Parents should be spending time with their kids to determine what is allowed in the household. Parents don’t have to drop what they are doing in order to accomplish the task because all it takes is five minutes of watching the child play.

I could also study the effects of a person playing a game and study the effects of a person doing drugs. This is in turn could help designate the pros and cons of the action at hand. From a recent psychology standpoint it is possible to determine these issues via P.E.T. scan. From this data I can determine the type of brain activity on the color level.

***********************************************************************************

Jim, is it possible to examine these issues via P.E.T. or fMRI scan on campus? I have seen pictures on other levels of activity such as drugs, and sleep. However, I am still confused and I wonder if this is even possible.

Thanks for your help,

Best to all, -John Ott

P.S. I can take care of the rest once I see the timetable of this event. Pictures would also be nice for the Obsevatory folder for me and in the records! (Knowledge continutes to grow inside there!)

The following article I have just stumbled upon is a preliminary start to what I want to look in a more in depth process.
***********************************************************************************

The Effect of Video Games on the Brain (Cons) *I also found some spelling mistakes.*

Eleni Kardaras

The effect of video games on the brain is a research area gaining popularity as the percentage of children and adults who play video games is on the rise. Some people believe violence in video games and in other media promotes violent behavior among viewers. While there is not sufficient data to validate this claim, there are a number of studies showing that video games can increase aggressive behavior and emotional outbursts, and decrease inhibitions. From a few of these studies, and from my own observations of children playing video games, it is quite obvious that the video games do have at least some effect on the behavior of the player. The extent and long range consequences of these behavior changes after one has turned off the video game are not so easily deduced. One source states that "While research on video games and aggressive behavior must be considered preliminary, it may be reasonably inferred from the more than 1,000 reports and studies on television violence that video game violence may also contribute to aggressive behavior and desensitization to violence" (1). Another study reports that "Hostility was increased both in subjects playing a highly aggressive video game and those playing a mildly aggressive video game. Subjects who had played the high-aggression game were significantly more anxious than other subjects" (2).

I had a chance to observe the effects of video games first hand on two boys, ages eight and ten, when I babysat them earlier in the semester. They were playing the video game "Mario Kart," which is really not a very violent game; the object is to win a car race by coming in first while maneuvering through different courses. When the younger brother won, the older brother got up and started kicking him and yelling insults! Later on that day, the younger brother was playing another video game by himself and when he could not beat the level, he threw down the controller and screamed at the t.v. screen, "Why are you doing this to me...?!" and burst into tears. I was very shocked by this reaction and was not quite sure how to handle the situation. This game had brought an eight year old boy to tears, right in front of me. "Certainly, video games can make some people go nuts. You just have to look at some enthusiasts playing video games on their cellular phones, mumbling to themselves heatedly even though others are around them. At game centers (penny arcades), frustrated people punch or kick game machines without regard to making a spectacle of themselves" (3). From the above descriptions, it seems that players get somewhat "sucked" into the video game and become oblivious to their surroundings and much less inhibited to share their emotions. What types of changes are occurring in the brain to activate this behavior which one exhibits when "sucked" into a video game?

Akio Mori, a professor at Tokyo's Nihon University, conducted a recent study observing the effects of video games on brain activity. He divided 260 people into three groups: those who rarely played video games, those who played between 1 and 3 hours three to four times a week, and those who played 2 to 7 hours each day. He then monitored "the beta waves that indicate liveliness and degree of tension in the prefrontal region of the brain, and alpha waves, which often appear when the brain is resting" (4). The results showed a higher decrease of beta waves the more one played video games. "Beta wave activity in people in the [highest amount of video game playing] was constantly near zero, even when they weren't playing, showing that they hardly used the prefrontal regions of their brains. Many of the people in this group told researchers that they got angry easily, couldn't concentrate, and had trouble associating with friends" (4). This suggests two important points. One, that the decrease of beta wave activity and usage of the prefrontal region of the brain may correlate with the aggressive behavior, and two, that the decrease of beta waves continued after the video game was turned off, implying a lasting effect. Another study found similar results and reported: "Youths who are heavy gamers can end up with 'video-game brain,' in which key parts of the frontal region of their brain become chronically underused, altering moods" (5). This study also asserts that a lack of use of the frontal brain, contributed by video games, can change moods and could account for aggressive and reclusive behavior. An important question arises: if the brain is so impacted by video games as to create behavioral changes, must that mean that the brain perceives the games as real?

Perhaps looking at what effects video games have on autonomic nerves can begin to answer that question. "'Many video games stir up tension and a feeling of fear, and there is a very real concern that this could have a long-term effect on the autonomic nerves,' Mori commented" (6). Autonomic nerves are those connected with involuntary internal organ processes, such as breathing and heart rate. "Heart rate can be altered by electrical signals from emotional centers in the brain or by signals from the chemical messengers called epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. These hormones are released from the adrenal glands in response to danger..." (7). Multiple studies have reported that playing video games can significantly increase heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen consumption. If studies show that heart rate is increased when playing video games, then it seems that the brain is responding to the video game as if the body is in real danger. Does repeated exposure to this "false" sense of danger have an effect on what the brain then perceives as real danger?

From the above studies and observations, video games do effect the players in some ways, since it appears that players get so wrapped up in the game that they forget their surroundings and begin to see the game as a real quest. Studies have shown that playing video games can increase heart rate and blood pressure, as well as decrease prefrontal lobe activity while the person is playing the game. This could account for changes in the player's mood and cause him or her to become more aggressive or emotional. However, the extent of these effects on the body once video game playing has ceased are preliminary and need to be confirmed.

Different Ways To Think? (2-2)

According to some research I have been digging up, I think there may be a way to transfer audio and pictures to this blog. We all know about the recent teenage obsession with "Myspace" (which allows the user to manifest both audio, and pictures) Well I might be considering doing that in order to expand the level of understanding and involvement of the information that is represented throughout the day. I will not be sacrificing the level of quality in the information... (this means the teenagers who use Myspace may consider me a genius!)

Best to all, -John Ott

P.S. I will let all of you know if changes are made!
